02.01.2018, Steuler-Fliesen, REACTIVE: Manufaktur in Serie

The 100 Collection

The arc from traditional to modern

100 years of Steuler-Fliesen – 100 years of passion for ceramics. The tile manufacturer from Mühlacker has been developing an excellent reputation for itself since 1917: for high-quality products and sophisticated design. True to form, the “100 Collection” combines two highlight series with quite special décor.

The in-house development department has delved deep into the ceramic treasure chest and conjured up the traditional technique of titanium matte glazes. This method is very popular in ceramic art because the titanium dioxide that is used takes on an interesting life of its own. During firing, it forms small crystals, so-called rutile crystals, which develop very differently in terms of size, structure and colour depending on several factors. For example, the crystals turn bluish or reddish depending on the oxygen content in the kiln’s atmosphere. It would hardly be possible to replicate these effects in the conventional manufacturing process. But Steuler-Fliesen captures them using digital printing – thus creating a reproducible variety of motifs.

A traditional technique executed using the latest methods: the perfect arc from traditional to modern.

New Product: REACTiVE

Handcrafted in series production

The “Reactive” shows off the immense ceramic know-how of Steuler-Fliesen: a look that is simultaneously traditional and modern. Manufactured using craftsmanship and high tech. The cumulative experience of 100 years. “The development of the ‘Reactive’ was very demanding;” reports Product Developer, Alfons Duevel, “we experimented exhaustively with the untameable titanium effect glaze and poured many different images by hand.” The transfer of these patterns into digital printing was the real challenge. Translating the vibrancy of a ceramic glaze digitally has been a great success.

The most beautiful of these patterns are taken into series production, whereby the digital printing inks are printed onto the still unfired glaze. The decorative tiles are available in titanium blue, which has a cool metallic effect and is evocative of the sky on a winter’s morning – and in titanium red, the naturally warm version, which is slightly reminiscent of a sandy beach. The matching base tiles in “Warm” and “Cool” were developed from the decorative tiles. They take up the respective colouration and cloudy structure of the decorative tiles. The decorative and base tiles are available in 25 x 70 cm and the decorative version is also available as mosaic (5 x 5 cm). The “Steinwerk” floor complements the statement made by the series superbly.

The “Reactive” consciously has no rectified edges, but rather classical raw edges, which convey the charm of glazed tiles. This underlines the traditional aspect - as well as the idea that no two tiles are alike. Despite the modern production methods, the “Reactive” is not mass-produced. It is handcrafted in series production. Typical Steuler-Fliesen.
